Paralysis or brain stroke is a major cause of death like heart attack. But very few people have any idea of what it is and how serious it is. The prestigious medical journal Lancet has warned in a report on brain stroke that by the year 2050, one crore people will start dying from it every year in the world. This means that within 30 years the number of deaths due to paralysis will increase by 50 percent. India’s situation is the most serious in South-East Asia. It has been said in this report that every year about 13 lakh people are suffering brain stroke in India. Of these, 18 to 42 percent people die within a month. Many paralyzed people are unable to live a normal life.
Simply put, brain stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted. This causes lack of oxygen and causes damage to the brain. An important aspect highlighted in the report is that more than half of the deaths due to brain stroke are due to bleeding in the brain, and not the formation of blood clots. This gives an idea that paralysis is linked to diseases caused by lifestyle. At present, the risk of brain stroke is also increasing due to increasing problems like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol etc. Now people are becoming victims of it even at a younger age than before.
Brain stroke is becoming more common in people under 45 in South-East Asia and this is due to lifestyle. Hypertension, i.e. excessive stress, was the main reason for 30 percent of stroke cases in India. Experts also suggest ways to avoid this, some of which are common and important. To prevent stroke, it is important to control blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. A lot of this is possible by arranging the lifestyle. Controlling eating habits, regular exercise and avoiding obesity make a big difference. But a big challenge regarding stroke is the lack of information about it. Not recognizing the symptoms of stroke and delaying treatment can be fatal for the patient. In such a situation, special attention should be paid to increasing awareness about the symptoms of brain stroke.
