After run machine Virat Kohli’s unforgettable century, experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s historic five-wicket haul helped Team India register a spectacular 243-run win over South Africa in the ICC World Cup 2023 on Sunday.
Rohit Sharma’s men registered a record win over South Africa at the historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Many records were made behind this victory. Be it Virat’s equal to Sachin’s record or Jadeja’s record of five wickets in the World Cup.
Batting first in match number 37 of the World Cup 2023, table-toppers India posted a mammoth score of 326-5 in 50 overs against second-placed South Africa at the prestigious Eden Gardens. After India lost captain Rohit (40) inside the powerplay, former captain Kohli took charge.
Former Indian captain Kohli along with leading batsman Shreyas Iyer added 134 runs for the third wicket. Rewriting history in the 50-over format, Kohli equaled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of centuries. Kohli celebrated his 35th birthday by equaling his record 49th ODI international century.
Kohli also scored his first ODI century at the same venue in 2009. Kohli joined Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli, Sanath Jayasuriya, Ross Taylor and Mitchell Marsh in the list of batsmen who scored centuries on their respective birthdays.
In his last 15 ODI innings, Kohli has scored 1,091 runs against South Africa at an incredible average of 109.10. It took Kohli 277 innings to score 49 centuries in ODIs. Great batsman Tendulkar scored 49 centuries in 438 innings.
While Kohli created history with his 49th ODI century, South Africa’s Marco Johnson made an unwanted record. Proteas pacer gave away 94 runs. Which is the highest number of runs conceded by a South African bowler in a World Cup match.
Performing well for India with the ball, Jadeja recorded a historic five-wicket haul. Whereas South Africa collapsed for 83 runs in 27.1 overs. The Proteas made their joint second-lowest score in the 50-over format. India gave South Africa its biggest defeat in terms of runs in the World Cup.
For the first time in ODI this year, South Africa failed to hit even a single six. Jadeja took his first five-wicket haul in the World Cup and the all-rounder also became the second spinner for India to take a five-wicket haul in the showpiece event. Jadeja has joined the exclusive club of great cricketer Yuvraj Singh (5 wickets for 31 runs against Ireland).
Kohli, who was named player of the match for his century, outclassed the entire South African team at the Eden Gardens. After Kumar Sangakkara (169), Kohli is the second batsman to beat South Africa in ODIs.
The contribution of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in this match cannot be forgotten. India has registered its eighth consecutive win. This is Team India’s best performance so far in the World Cup. India has become a strong contender for the World Cup.
